Doctoral study
Doctoral (PhD) study represents the highest level of university education and is focused on the acquisition of scientific knowledge and independent research skills. It is carried out within accredited study programmes and is completed by the defence of a doctoral thesis, leading to the award of the academic degree “PhD”.
The Jessenius Faculty of Medicine offers 17 doctoral programmes across five fields of study in both full-time and part-time forms.

Duration of Doctoral Study
The standard duration of doctoral study is as follows:
- Full-time form of study: 4 years
- Part-time form of study: 5 years
Doctoral study is organised in accordance with applicable legislation and an individual study plan, which is prepared by the supervisor and approved by the Board of the Study Programme.
Individual Study Plan
The individual study plan of a doctoral student consists of a study part and a scientific part, including teaching activities (maximum 4 hours per week; 208 hours per year, i.e. 104 hours per semester) and other related activities.
I. Study Part
- course in Methodology of Scientific Research
- foreign language proficiency examination
- course in Basics of Statistical Analysis
- individual study based on subjects defined in the study plan
II. Scientific Part
- individual or team-based research related to the dissertation topic
- this part is organised under the supervision of the supervisor
Assessment of Doctoral Student Progress
The progress of doctoral students is assessed through:
- annual evaluation of the doctoral student
- dissertation examination
- defence of the dissertation
