Medical Education Support Center

Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Martin

The Medical Education Support Center at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Martin (JFMED CU) was established in May 2012, originally under the name Simulation Education Center of JFMED CU in Martin.

The Center was founded with the financial support of the European Union Structural Funds, specifically thanks to the following projects:

• “Support for the Development of Human Resources Using the Most Modern Methods and Forms of Education at JFMED CU” under the Operational Programme Education,
• “Establishment of a Library-Information, Computing and Simulation Education Center and Modernization of ICT at JFMED CU in Martin” under the Operational Programme Research and Development.

As a specialized department, it primarily provided space and material-technical equipment for the teaching of subjects such as Emergency Medicine, Surgical Propaedeutics, Surgery, and Internal Propaedeutics. Later, the center's activities expanded into the form it operates today.

Over time, its activities were gradually expanded to the comprehensive scope in which the Center operates today.

In 2021, the center underwent a change in name, structure, and also broadened its mission—extending collaboration with the MKM, the Slovak Medical Students’ Association (SLOMSA), primary and secondary  schools in the region, as well as  with various non-profit and special-interest organizations.

The center is located in the Academic Information Center building, together with the library and the Institute of Information Technologies, at Novomestského Street No. 7, close to the JFMED CU Student Dormitory.

The  Medical Education Support Center was created to reflect the most modern trends in medical education and in the training of other healthcare specializations.
Its primary mission is integrate progressive pedagogical and methodological approaches into education, including technological tools for simulation and virtual education, with the idea of  linking theoretical preparation and clinical practice.

The Center is equipped with a continuously expanding range of educational tools, including simulators, training devices, anatomical and procedural models, as well as educational software (including virtual patient platforms).
It maintains close collaboration with other departments of JFMED CU and with various international partners.

 

The center focuses mainly on:

1. Supporting cooperation among various teaching bases of JFMED CU
2. Science and research in medical education
3. Developing the teaching skills of JFMED CU faculty members
4. Innovating and reforming the JFMED CU curriculum in alignment with the development of competencies necessary for medical practice
