INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS

Doctoral study at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin, Comenius University is developed in accordance with European principles of quality assurance in doctoral education in biomedicine, medicine and health sciences. The Faculty has long supported the implementation of the recommendations of ORPHEUS – Organisation for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System.

The international recommendations of ORPHEUS represent an important reference framework for the continuous development of the quality of doctoral education, research environment, supervision, assessment of PhD candidates and support for young researchers.

ORPHEUS (Organisation for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System) is a European organisation focused on promoting quality in doctoral education in biomedicine and health sciences.

The ORPHEUS recommendations primarily focus on:

• quality of the research environment,
• transparent admission procedures,
• organisation of doctoral education,
• quality of supervision,
• ethical principles in research,
• assessment of PhD candidates,
• quality of PhD theses,

The document ORPHEUS Best Practices for PhD Training represents current European recommendations for doctoral education in biomedicine and health sciences. The document is based on the ORPHEUS-AMSE-WFME standards and provides recommendations concerning:

• organisation of doctoral programmes,
• admission procedures and selection of PhD candidates,
• individual study plans,
• supervision and assessment of PhD candidates,
• publication activities,
• research ethics,
• international mobility,
• quality assurance in doctoral education.

In 2012, the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin organised the international ORPHEUS workshop entitled: „PhD Study from the Student Views“

The workshop focused on issues related to doctoral education in preclinical and clinical medical disciplines and supported the implementation of the ORPHEUS-AMSE-WFME standards in doctoral training.

An important part of the workshop was the discussion on:

• quality of clinical PhD education,
• integration of clinical practice and research,
• ethical principles in research,
• mobility of PhD candidates,
• support for young researchers in medicine.

One of the outcomes of the workshop was the MARTIN DECLARATION on PhD Study in Medical Sciences, which supported the implementation of the ORPHEUS-AMSE-WFME standards and formulated recommendations for the further development of doctoral education in medical sciences.

The Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin supports international cooperation in doctoral education, mobility of PhD candidates and implementation of international recommendations related to the quality of doctoral training.

The Faculty actively participates in activities supporting:
