MedGames Junior: Jessenius Faculty of Medicine Hosts Successful Medical Student Competition
On April 1, 2023, the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University in Martin hosted the first edition of MedGames Junior, a thrilling competition for medical students to showcase their practical skills, communication abilities, and theoretical knowledge. The event, held at the Center for Medical Education Support, saw enthusiastic participation from 12 teams, vying for the top spot in a series of challenging tasks.
The competition, open to students of general and dental medicine from 1st to 3rd year, featured a total of 12 tasks, with each team given 15 minutes to solve them. The tasks were carefully designed to test the students' proficiency in first aid, crisis intervention, anatomy, histology, and biophysics, emphasizing the integration of theoretical knowledge with clinical practice.
One of the unique aspects of MedGames Junior was the use of simulated situations that closely mirrored real-life scenarios. Some tasks required participants to work with actors whose performances were so realistic that they pushed the boundaries of simulations. Referees oversaw the competition to ensure fairness and objectivity.
At the end of the event, the team "Včelári" consisting of Laura Fedorková, Jakub Šagát, and Michal Vyparina secured the first-place position, showcasing their exceptional skills and knowledge. The team "Trichróm" comprising Marek Laheye, Juraj Dudáš, and Martin Matušík secured the second-place position, closely followed by the team "Chajda" with Adrián Kňazovický, Valerián Kuffa, and Marián Rusnák in third place.
Reflecting on the experience, Laura Fedorková, a 2nd-year student of general medicine and member of the winning team, praised the competition for its practical approach, stating, "The tasks were great and tested our knowledge and skills. You never know when something might happen to you or your loved ones, and that's why it's amazing to be prepared for these situations. I have no regrets about participating in this competition, quite the opposite." Andrián Kňazovický, a 3rd-year student of general medicine, emphasized the importance of practical experience in the medical profession, saying, "Although theoretical knowledge is an essential part of the medical profession, practice is the goddess of wisdom."
MedGames Junior at Jessenius Faculty of Medicine was a resounding success, providing a platform for medical students to hone their skills, showcase their talents, and foster a spirit of healthy competition. The event promises to be a highlight in the calendar of medical students, paving the way for future editions of this exciting competition.
