Basics of medical terminology - 1st and 2nd semester

The aim of teaching this subject is orientation in Latin medical terminolgy because the knowledge of certain components of the linguistic structure of Latin and partly Greek is a prerequisite for adequate and quick mastering of terminologies all medical disciplines. The main output of the teaching is the acquisition of terminological competence, i.e. ability to use Latin medical terminology accurately and correctly. A graduate of medical faculty should meet the following criteria:

a) mastery of the phonetic and graphic sides of Latin

b) command of selected elements of the linguistic morphological system, related to selected noun and verb forms

c) knowledge of Latin vocabulary, i.e. acquisition of a basic corpus of terms with an emphasis on anatomy, basic clinical disciplines, and pharmacy

d) mastery of the basic syntactic structures of medical terms (multi-word terms, matching and non-matching adjectives, word order, prescriptions in Latin)

e) control of the word-forming systems of single-word terms (affixation, polysemy of prefixes, polyfunctionality of suffixes) and mutual relations of word-forming elements (synonymy, antonymy, homonymy).

English language, German language - 1st and 2nd semester

The goal of studying foreign languages at the medical faculty is the acquisition of foreign language competence, which enables a smooth acquisition and processing of information from foreign language sources, supports creative thinking and presentation of professional knowledge in a foreign language. The output from the teaching of a foreign language has a significant professional focus - the future doctor should acquire receptive skills when working with professional medical texts (reading comprehension, effective reading strategy) as well as productive skills in written and oral expression necessary for future professional communication.

Foreign language for special purposes (optional subject) - 7th and 8th semester

The aim of this optional course is to develop doctor-patient communication skills in 4th academic year in general medicine students. Topics are selected from all major disciplines, starting with internal medicine. The main output of the teaching is a significant expansion of professional vocabulary. Emphasis is placed on developing the ability to listen to the patient´s complaints, actively react to them, ask suitable questions necessary for taking a patient history, instruct the patient during physical examination, explain the necessary treatment procedures and advise him/her what to do and what no to do, all in such a way that the learned skill reflects the wished language skill.
