CONCEPT OF ORTHOPAEDICS AND TEACHING

Orthopaedics is a medical field focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system (MSS). The scope of healthcare in this field is precisely defined by Slovak law no. 305/2005, Coll., "On the Concept of Healthcare in the Field of Orthopaedics."

On September 7, 2006, the agreement on the establishment of teaching workplaces outlined the principles of education and scientific research activities, setting the following priorities at the department:

  • Emphasising the practical engagement of students and young doctors, bringing them closer to patients while teaching effective communication and patient information. This involves a comprehensive set of practical measures, including room assignments, active participation in ward rounds, diagnostic meetings, departmental work, outpatient care, dressing changes, and other clinical tasks, as well as time spent assisting in operating theatres.
  • Emphasis on a culture of professional dialogue and relationships, not only in teaching but also in mutual communication among students, along with their interactions with assistants, department heads, and medical staff.
  • Emphasis on clinical reasoning in orthopaedics and traumatology, including a relational assessment of the musculoskeletal system, current diagnostic and treatment approaches, clinical case analysis, and the practical application of new diagnostic methods in the field.
  • The role of a university educator is irreplaceable. They must motivate, guide, and engage the most capable young individuals who can meet the practical needs of modern clinical research—provided they have the right conditions to do so.
