HISTORY

Department of Hematology and Transfusion was established in 1992. The first Head ofdepartment was Professor Peter Kubisz. His Deputy Head was Doctor Jan Hudecek (the currentchief physician).

The Dept. of Hematology and Transfusiology is a part of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, where it acts as a teaching basis for pre- and post- graduate training on hematology for medical students, doctors, nurses and laboratory workers; and the Martin University Hospital where it offers medical care for patients with broad variety of hematological disorders. The department is especially focused on diagnosis assessment and treatment of thrombophilic states.

Department is divided in three parts: the outpatient department, the inpatient department and the laboratories. The Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantations are performed at the inpatient department.

The National Center of Hemostasis and Thrombosis (NCHT) is a part of the department since 1995. The NCHT has a Slovakia-wide authority for the diagnostic and treatment of hereditary and acquired thrombophilic states. It runs the National Register of Thrombophilic States. It also performs educational and consultation activities.

The Slovak Center for Rare Bleeding and Thrombogenic disorders was established at our department in 2017 (see decision here - available only in Slovak language).

The department collaborates with several hematological societies worldwide.
