45th Students' Scientific Conference
On Tuesday, April 23, the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University in Martin celebrated the 45th edition of its Students' Scientific Conference. This prestigious event showcased the extensive research conducted by students under the guidance of their mentors across various medical and non-medical fields.
The conference chair, Assoc. Prof. Michal Šimera, PhD, reported that this year's conference featured 40 student projects categorized into theoretical, preclinical, clinical, and non-medical sections. 'The topics were diverse, covering fields from surgery and gastroenterology to gynecology and neurology. Other sections included 3D printing, neurophysiology, and biochemistry. It's truly varied, and it's great to see students engaging with what they are passionate about,' Šimera noted.
Some students, through their participation in ŠVOČ, have gained opportunities to collaborate directly with faculty projects, integrating their academic pursuits with real-world applications. 'This is our 45th conference, and our faculty is approaching its 55th anniversary, so this event has been a staple for decades. It's a day when we see the potential within our students and what they can achieve under the mentorship of their advisors in the realm of science,' said Prof. Andrea Čalkovská, Dean of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine.
The conference not only allowed students to present their findings but also involved an interactive component where the audience could vote via a mobile app to support their peers. The student receiving the most votes in each section was awarded the Student Prize (audience choice award).
An expert jury evaluated all submissions and recognized the top three projects, highlighting the increasing quality of work, which Dean Čalkovská attributed to advancements in medical science and evolving research methodologies.
