The Jessenius Faculty of Medicine Receives the Patron of Architecture Award
At a gala event on Wednesday, 3 October 2018, the CE.ZA.AR 2018 national architecture awards ceremony was held. Comenius University’s Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin, represented by its dean Ján Danko, received the Patron of Architecture Award for its initiation and organization of a competition of architectural submissions for the Hospital of the Future in Martin.
The Patron of Architecture Award for a special contribution to the development of architecture (which is not expressed by an architectural work) was presented for the third time by the competition organizers. This award is not determined by an international panel but rather by the executive body of the Slovak Chamber of Architects. Instead of rewarding architectonic performance, its primary aim is to highlight positive examples of good practice.
The award this year went to the Hospital of the Future project in Martin, which is an architectonic competition of proposals. The initiator of this project is the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University, which was represented by its dean, Professor Ján Danko. The author of the winning proposal for the hospital were architects from the Pantograph studio.
The Slovak Chamber of Architects awarded the Patron of Architecture for the remarkable representation of an expert and innovative approach to creating the concept of a new faculty hospital in Martin. This architectonic competition of proposals for the Hospital of the Future in Martin is a good example to follow in redesigning Slovak health care for the needs of the 21st century. The competition has opened a new series of discussions on ways of building hospitals and has importantly given room to Slovak architects in this discussion, which was not an opportunity they had been afforded in past decades.
