Be Prepared, Not Surprised!
During June 6 and 9, 2023, mentor nurses at the University Hospital Martin have orchestrated the second edition of their workshop, "Be Prepared, Not Surprised", for nursing students at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin.
Second-year nursing program students had the opportunity to practice their communication skills in the hospital's clinical teaching and nursing technique facilities. They focused on deploying de-escalation techniques when communicating with aggressive patients and then turned their attention to patient bed fixation techniques. A topic of particular interest for the students was the nursing care of patients with specific invasive entry points, such as PICC and PORT, which many encountered for the first time.
The workshop for first-year students was held within the premises of the University Hospital Martin. They engaged in hands-on training, replicating situations from real-world clinical nursing practice. The students practiced manipulating infusomats and injectomats, nursing care for central venous catheters and peripheral venous lines. In the third session, they learned about oral care and suctioning airways in conscious patients with tracheostomies.
Both the organizers and participating students have positively reviewed the workshop's concept and thematic specificity. The students particularly appreciated the professionalism and dedication of the nurse mentors, the opportunity for practical intervention training, and expressed interest in exploring further topics in the future. This collaborative initiative epitomizes the hospital's commitment to educating and preparing future healthcare professionals.
