Conference on Patient Nutrition

From September 26 to 28, the 31st conference of the Slovak Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (SSPEN) took place in Martin. The event, dedicated to expert lectures on clinical nutrition for patients, was attended by specialists from across Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

According to Dr. Juraj Krivuš, head physician of the Metabolic Department at the 1st Internal Clinic of the University Hospital Martin and the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University (JFMED CU), the main topics covered included new trends in clinical nutrition, the relationship between nutrition and immunity, enteral nutrition, dietetics, nutrition for the elderly, preoperative nutritional preparation, chronic intestinal failure, the metabolic syndrome, and more.

"Given that hospitals in the Western world have the highest proportion of malnourished patients, we are focusing on how to properly nourish them during hospitalization and on the latest advancements in nutrition for critically ill patients. We are also addressing how to assist patients with short bowel syndrome and how to nourish patients with obesity, as well as discussing the new drugs currently used to treat obesity," said SSPEN President Dr. Juraj Krivuš during the congress.

The conference was attended by experts from fields such as obesity treatment, intensive care, surgery, nephrology, internal medicine, oncology, and more.
