Innovative Breast Tumor Treatment
The Clinic of General, Visceral, and Transplant Surgery at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Martin, in cooperation with the University Hospital Martin, has introduced a groundbreaking innovation in breast tumor treatment: the localization and removal of small, non-palpable breast tumors using iodine seed localization. This minimally invasive surgical method is precise, safe, and gentle on women’s health.
“Iodine seed localization allows us to clearly mark tumor tissue prior to surgery, helping preserve as much healthy breast tissue as possible and significantly reducing the risk of reoperation,” explained Assoc. Prof. Marek Smolár, MD, PhD, MPH, from the Clinic of General, Visceral, and Transplant Surgery at JFMED CU and University Hospital Martin.
Modern diagnostics and oncology treatment are seamlessly integrated into a single procedure, enhancing patient comfort and reducing the stress commonly associated with traditional approaches. The technique is particularly effective for small or deeply located tumors that cannot be detected by touch.
With this innovation, the University Hospital Martin reaffirms its leading role in the use of advanced technologies for surgical breast tumor treatment in Slovakia.
